Ai Act

The AI Act is a law designed to regulate artificial intelligence systems by setting standards and rules for their development and use. Rather than banning AI, the law uses a risk-based approach that treats some systems as more dangerous and therefore subject to stricter controls. High-risk systems — for example those used in critical infrastructure, hiring, or legal decisions — must meet requirements for transparency, accuracy, and human oversight. Lower-risk systems face lighter obligations, such as providing clear information to users, while certain uses might be restricted or prohibited altogether. The law also requires developers and providers to carry out conformity checks, maintain documentation, and monitor performance after deployment. The Act matters because it aims to protect people from harm, prevent bias and discrimination, and increase public trust in technologies that affect daily life. It gives companies clearer rules so they know what is allowed and what safeguards are required, which can reduce legal uncertainty and encourage responsible innovation. At the same time, it challenges businesses and researchers to build and test systems more carefully, which can mean more upfront cost and oversight. For citizens, the law offers stronger protections and more transparency about how automated decisions are made and who is responsible. Because it sets a widely watched standard, the regulation could also influence AI policy beyond the region where it applies.
